There are so many fad diets that have come and go. We will see many new ones pop up as older ones vanish. The question is, why do Americans have a high rate of overweight people. You would think that with so many diet plans and diet supplements we would have no issues with maintaining a healthy weight. The fact is company’s make so much money off of people battling weight loss. Some of these plans and supplements are actually harmful and dangerous to your health. The only way to lose and maintain a healthy weight is to have a healthy nutrition plan and stay active. This article will be going over protein and weight loss.

I am sure that you have been hearing the word protein more and more over the past years. From high protein diets to protein shakes and drinks. Commercials are on all the time promoting products now high in protein. To maintain a healthy weight, exercise and a healthy nutrition program have been proven to work.

Higher Protein Diets

Diets that are higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates and fats have been shown to help control appetite and calories. Diets now up to 30% of the daily calories are more of the norm. Studies have shown that a great starting point for eating healthy is to have your calories come from 50% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 20% healthy fats. Everyone does not handle macronutrients the same way so it might be necessary for you to adjust according to your daily active, fitness level, age and lifestyle.

It has been shown that individuals who exercise and have diets higher in protein have lower blood fats and more lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have the higher your metabolism will be. Body fat will be the main source for fuel. Protein has also been found to help keep hunger down and causes fewer insulin spikes.

What Does Protein Do

  • Proteins are needed for all stages of life.
  • Muscles and bones major component are proteins.
  • Protein is necessary for growth, tissue repair, development, and helps fight off infections.
  • Protein also produces hormones and enzymes that the body needs.
  • Carbohydrates and fats are the bodies main fuel source. If you are highly active you might need more protein for your body to recuperate. If you do not get enough protein your recuperation will slow down and this could cause overtraining and injury.
  • Hair and nails are made mostly of protein.
  • Protein helps make your muscle contract.

Protein For Weight Loss

Remember that it takes the right amount of nutrients for a healthy weight, and for good health. If you are planning on going on a weight loss program be patient. Your goal should be to keep the weight off after you have lost it. Do not get caught up in the vicious circle of losing the same pounds over and over. Eat a healthy and give your body the macronutrients it needs to perform at its best.

Protein is unique in that the body does not store protein. Carbohydrates and fats can be stored by the body for future energy. It is important to include a protein with every meal.
By eating right and exercising you will enjoy a better quality of life.

Best of health and happiness,
