Overview
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a type of surgery that is aimed to improve blood supply to the heart muscles. It is performed on patients who have severe coronary heart disease (CHD), also known as coronary artery disease. Coronary arteries are meant to supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles.CHD occurs when a substance called plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries and cause atherosclerosis i.e. hardening of blood vessels due to deposition of plaque. Plaque, when get deposited on the walls of coronary arteries can narrow or block the coronary arteries and reduce or obstruct blood flow to the heart muscles i.e. myocardium.
Narrowing of coronary arteries causes inadequate blood supply to meet oxygen demand of myocardium during exercise that may cause shortness of breath, heart attack and Angina. Often, blood clot i.e. thrombosis formed on plaque or some part of detached plaque can block the artery leading to heart attack.
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) re-establishes adequate blood supply to myocardium to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. CABG procedure involves taking a healthy blood vessel from patient’s leg, arm or chest and connecting it beyond the blocked arteries in heart.
Once surgeon joins up the grafts, blood flows through them into blocked arteries beyond the blocks i.e. bypassing the blockage. As blockages are not removed but just bypassed, CABG is also known as bypass surgery. CABG eases and provides relief from symptoms, such as chest pain and shortness of breath. It also improves heart functions and reduces risk of death due to coronary heart disease. The types of CABG techniques include:
- Traditional Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
- Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (Beating Heart Bypass Surgery)
- Minimally Invasive Coronary Bypass Techniques
- Port-access coronary artery bypass procedure
- Robotic or Robot-assisted technique
Benefits of CABG include:
- Life saving procedure for heart attack and angina emergencies
- Treatment of Angina, shortness of breath and heart attacks due to narrowing or blockage of coronary arteries
- Performed with grafts taken from the patient’s body
