Little Mr A was recently sent a lovely book from My Little Big Town to review.  You may remember we reviewed some of their e-books earlier in the year and were very impressed.

Pirates don’t play cricket – a book review

Pirates don’t play Cricket is a beautifully illustrated, rhyming picture book about pirates, friendship, teamwork and cricket, written by former New Zealand international cricket player Iain O’Brien and first time children’s author and teacher, Rowan Gibson.

Synopsis…

This fantastically funny, sporty and swashbuckling picture book for children features a host of hilarious pirates, a treasure chest full of gold, pirate ships, a parrot…. oh, and cricket! Avast there me hearties!

When Dan and Priya are out walking near the beach one day they spot a band of rag-tag, snarling pirates down below on the sand. Much to their surprise, the pirates are in the middle of a game of cricket. They’re not very good but they’re trying!

After discovering that the pirates aren’t as frightening as they first seemed to be, Dan and Priya join in the game. Before long the children and the pirates are enjoying an exciting (and very silly) game of cricket… that is until they spot the evil pirates ship on the horizon.

Dan & Priya, along with their new friends must repel the bad pirates in any way they can. With a swashbuckling combination of teamwork, flaming coconuts, cannons blazing and cutlasses flashing a mighty battle ensues.

What did we think?

This probably isn’t the kind of book I would have chosen for Little Mr A at first glance.  He is not the sportiest boy and with the book having ‘cricket’ in the title I wasn’t sure whether he would enjoy it.  On reading the book though my opinion changed, it is not all about sport at all, it is mainly about pirates and adventure which Little Mr A loves!  He really enjoyed the story and the rhyming aspect of the book.  The illustrations are really bright and engaging and Little Mr A liked looking at them.  It has made a great bedtime read!

Overall we really enjoyed this story and would certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good pirate adventure, not just sports fans!
