Photo Essay – Wandering Around in the Dahlem Museums

You are in Berlin and it rains. A lot. And you fancy a huge dosis of art and history. Then there is one destination that Lars and I can recommend: the Dahlem Museum Complex. The name Dahlem refers to the part of Berlin where it is located. There are three museums: the Museum für Asiatischer Kunst (Museum for Asian Art), Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) and Museum Europäischer Kulturen (Museum European Cultures).

As you can see, we started with the Asian museum, which covers both traditional and contemporary Asian art.

Not all parts of Asia are featured;  the collection concentrates on the eastern, southern and central parts of this continent.

In the Ethnological Museum Lars and I devoted a lot of our attention to the African section. To be honest, it was the very first time that we saw contemporary African art.

Time now for our personal favourite: the collection highlighting the Muslim world.

Lars and I visited only part of the museums. You really need at least half a day and … some good walking shoes, because there is a lot of ground to cover! And if you become hungry and/or thirsty, there is a cafetaria and restaurant at your disposal.
