Charges are related to work he did for a pro-Russian candidate in Ukraine. Manafort was paid millions to help get the man elected. He may have been paid $10-20 million. Another man named Gates, Manafort’s assistant, is also charged.
They are charged with attempting to defraud the United States. He never declared the money and instead Manafort laundered it through all sorts of other entities. He also never registered as a foreign agent in relation to this work. One of the charges is tax fraud or tax evasion.
