Pasiparuppu Sundal (Tempered Green Gram)

Pasiparuppu aka moong dal is green gram in English.The whole moong is green in color and the split dal is in yellow color.This is a very fast cooking lentil and suited best when there is time constraint.There are so many recipes ranging from simple dal,rasam,to rich halwa made using this dal and this simple sundal is one of them.For those who doesn't know sundal is a dish prepared in South India where any boiled lentil/legume is tempered with various spices.There is a tradition of making 9 different sundals for the 9 days of navrathri as offering to the goddess and distribute to those who visit our homes during the festival days.This pasiparuppi sundal is one among them and this van be made in almost no time.Unlike many other lentils this takes very less time to cook and this sundal can be made in 20 minutes flat.So try this simple protein rich vegan sundal and you will sure love it.

Star ingredient:pasi paruppu
Time:20 minutes
Serves:3
Ingredients:
3/4 cup pasi paruppu (green gram)
2 green chillies
1 red chilli
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon urad dal
1/2 teaspoon asadfoetida
10-12 curry leaves
Small piece of ginger crushed
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Juice of half a lemon
Salt
Oil to temper
Method:
1.Wash the pasi paruppu thoroughly and rinse well till the froth is gone.
2.Cook the dal with 2 cups of water and salt for 8-10 minutes not more than 12 minutes.The dal should be well cooked but not mushy.Drain the excess water and spread the cooked dal.
Pasiparuppu sundal (Tempered green gram)3.In a kadai,add 2 teaspoons oil and temper with mustard,urad dal,asafoetida curry leaves,chillies and ginger.
Pasiparuppu sundal (Tempered green gram)4.Add the cooked dal,sugar and sute for just 2 minutes.
Pasiparuppu sundal (Tempered green gram)5.Remove from flame,add lemon juice,mix well and serve.

1.Do not over cook the dal.10 minutes is the perfect timing for 3/4 cup dal.If it is over cooked it doesn not get the texture of sundal.
2.Coconut flakes are usually added but I did not add as I did not  have it on hand.After removing from flame mix 2 tablespoons of coconut flakes.
