Overeating: How Your Self-image Plays a Role in Food Choices

By Pamela Brown

The thoughts you carry about your body and yourself determines the attitudes towards as well as the type of food choices you make.

A good example of this is the all-too-common label many women give themselves: "I'm an overeater. I can't control myself."

In reality, they unintentionally set themselves up for failure, which goes on to lower their body image and self-image even more!

What can you do to break the overeating cycle?

Here are a few steps to take if you want to break the overeater label you give yourself... without realizing it.

1. If you are calling yourself an overeater, STOP!!! Why? Your thoughts, whatever they are, become truth. When you label yourself an overeater, you eventually begin to accept the toxic label. This label becomes your identity, and your identity is the core of you that you act out each day.

If you think of yourself as an overeater with low willpower, and no control over your weight and life, then you will create this very experience for yourself. You become attracted to those foods that create a sense of low control and willpower (i.e., high fat foods); or you eat hurriedly and without enjoyment, which will cause you to overeat.

This is why self-image and personal growth work is so essential. Success in overcoming the overeating cycle begins with developing a higher self-image. What positive qualities do you own, and how can you those each day?

What is good and wonderful about living in your body? What amazing things can your body do?

2. When you label yourself an overeater, you give away your power to take charge of your weight and body. Therefore, your body image and self-image suffers even more. You are not an overeater, but you can definitely increase the chances of doing so by doing the following:

  • eating while stressed
  • eating in a rush
  • eating with distractions
  • eating without pleasure and enjoyment
  • eating the wrong quality of foods

You are not an overeater; you create the conditions to become an overeater with your self-image, body image, lifestyle habits, and happiness in life.

===> If you want to overcome your overeating struggles, then do the opposite of the bullet points listed above!

Summary

Your body image and self-image determines the food you reach for, as well as attitudes you hold toward the foods you eat. Whatever you label yourself, so shall it be... What new stories, positive stories can you tell about yourself today?
