Why do you call them Mexicants? That’s so racist! That sort of racism is just disgusting. It makes me ill.
The proper and non-offensive way to refer to this group is Latrinos. In fact, I believe this is how they refer to themselves!
We should be kind and sensitive to needs of marginalized people of color laboring under the weight of late capitalism and White supremacy. We should not use racial slurs that attack these people and cause microaggressions and other psychological injuries. It is especially cruel to use racial slurs at someone when they are outside of their safe spaces and especially vulnerable. The use of a term such as “Mexicants” simply reeks of White privilege!
You know as well as I do that only White people can be racist because racism is an abuse of power. People of color have no power due to White supremacy, hence they cannot possibly be racist. Makes perfect sense, right?
As White people, we have a duty to fight racism. It is not enough to sit idly by and simply not be racist yourself. It is incumbent on White people to not only not engage in racism, but to fight racism. Not fighting racism is racist in and of itself! But really one must go further. Recall the words of Rabbi Noel Ignatiev that it is Whiteness itself that must be abolished. So it is incumbent on White people to not only fight racism themselves but also to go that one extra step and do their own part to abolish Whiteness – one must renounce Whiteness itself. Simply put, White people must stop being White.
In addition, we Whites are all deeply afflicted with racism due to our upbringing in a viciously White supremacist society. So in a way, all of us Whites are racist, maybe deep down inside. It is our job as Whites to constantly do battle with our own conscious and unconscious racism. That is what Whiteness Studies classes are for after all. We must be alert to our own microagressions and stop them as soon as we are aware of them. We must always remember that most important thing we can do as Whites is to check our privilege.
