Did I mention how totally awesome it is up here? We are at the tip of Newfoundland in the Labrador current. Little bit of everything in this current. Whales, dolphins, Puffins and ICEBERGS! They are crazy gorgeous. What a reward for pushing hard to get up north. We actually thought that we were too late in the season to see any bergs but here they are, and they’re a lot bigger than we thought, being summer and all. I tell you what it doesn’t feel like the peak of summer up here. It was 55F when we were at the tip which really isn't that bad but when you toss in 20 knot winds it gets bloody cold. Oddly people here in St Anthony’s are wearing shorts and t-shirt. Crazy Canadians!
We decided at the last minute yesterday that we will circumnavigate Newfoundland, its an extra 400 miles than if we were to go back the way we came but we would have the Labrador current on our side and we wouldn't be beating into the wind all the way down, plus we’ll be able to chase the icebergs down south.
The icebergs were so intimidating. We were going to try and butt our nose up to one and chip off some ice but decided against it when we kept hearing cracking like trees falling. The bergs are beginning to melt and break apart fast. I read that when they break up they roll. Last thing we want is a bloody berg rolling on us.
We’ll be spending a couple days in St. Anthony for groceries, laundry and a bit of R&R. Too bad we can’t get internet out at the boat. I’ll have to go into the local Inn to post this.
We didn’t get to chip any ice off of one of the huge icebergs but I did get some in a net off the back of the boat. When we get internet I’ll have to upload the video of it.
