When we heard that Damon Albarn was making a solo album, like many, we were uncontrollably excited ... but to hear the first cut, Everyday Robots, just the other day, we have to say that we've come up somewhat disappointed. He is, by all means, an absolute legend in the music industry, which begs the question, why is it that he has only managed to muster this?!
There's no doubt that he has gone for a very experimental style throughout, but that's not the reason that Damon beholds his status, and not what we've been waiting for at all. The dreariness of the track, to begin with, is just not on par ... there's a complete lack luster entity to it, which really gives of a different vibe to that of Blur, or Gorillaz, or Damon, as we knew him.
The lyrics, which are next on the hit list, really do come out as a little bit lame unfortunately. We could deal with the riff that repeats the whole way through, if the rest of the performance really made up for it, but in the case off lyricism, this is not pulled off, and with the first line, after forty seconds, being "We Are Everyday Robots, On Our Phones" ... it hardly speaks that he is the deepest of men, or that he can put pen to paper in a metaphorical wave of genius.
Next up, the vocal. We always knew that Damon wasn't the absolute best around, but that was the point of him. He'd get up there, shoot alongside the songs, and despite his lack of technical ability, he could pull it off unlike anyone else in the world ... but here, it's as though he is genuinely trying and, due to the lack of rock ambition, you genuinely listen and, throughout, a sigh of shame will come over you ... in the hope that something better will come out of his next single.
We're genuinely sorry for this review, but we've got to be honest ... we see this as a real punch in the guts too, but Damon Albarn's new single, is not what we wanted, and not what we expected.
Paul.
