Not Posh Enough for Opera?

When I married into the A family I knew they were all big musical and theater fans and, although, Big Mr A was more into rock and metal, it was still part of his background.

Now, having a completely different upbringing this was a whole new world to me!  The closest I had ever got to any kind of musical was Grease!

We recently sat down together to watch Les Mis.  We had been told lots of great stuff about it and were looking forward to a more high brow evening, rather than the usual comedies or zombie films we usually sit down to watch.  For the first few minutes I couldn’t stop giggling (particularly at Russell Crow who I found hilarious for some reason!).  After that I quite got into it and got used to the constant signing.  It was strange watching it on the small screen and did feel that it lost some of it’s appeal and atmosphere, however, it got me asking myself; maybe I’m just not posh enough for musicals and opera?

I don’t think any theater would be happy with me giggling away whilst everyone else was trying to listen and take it seriously?!  I’m not even sure what I find amusing really!  My other concern is that I would struggle to keep up with what was going on become distracted easily.

Having said the above though, I would love to experience going to an Opera at least once in my lifetime.  Having had a look online there are lots to choose from including Rodelina and Madam Butterfly which are two that really stood out for me on the English National Opera website.

What do you think?  Do you have to be posh to go to the Opera, or can it be for anyone?
