Near-Perfect Numbness ...

Posted on the 27 December 2013 by Tlb Music Blog @TLB_Blog
We were very recently shown Sam Brookes by a friend, and it is with great sorrow that we hadn't heard him before this. We wish we knew about Sam a while back, and would have therefore been capable of offering him up to you earlier ... but that's just the way some things go and, now that we do know about him, and his incredible new single, Numb, we're proud to be able to present him. Sam Brookes.
Near-Perfect Numbness ...It's not one of the most fast-paced songs you'll hear, but it is filed with an utter beauty that is hard to come across. The likenesses to Ben Howard's last EP, Burgh Island, is relatively obvious, and the harmonies reminded us of Josh Record ... but also, not forgetting Fleet Foxes - a combination we really can't afford to sniff at.
Sam manages to convey a lot in the 6 minutes he'll have you listening. It's not as though this is a particularly happy track, but it is one that will have you smiling. And in contrast, it's not a particularly melancholic one either, but you'll reflect and relive past pains that are deeply set within your mind ... it's quite a mystical feat this one.
We're unsure where Sam will go from this record, as he has many options and directions he could take. With a talent like his, he could become much more upbeat, take the world by storm and recreate the success that singer/songwriters like Ben Howard and Ed Sheeran have had. However, there's no doubt in our minds that he could stick to the slower, more aesthetic pieces, and still come up with the world falling at his feet ... though that road may take a little longer.
Either way, we think this is truly fantastic!
Paul.
