Natural Remedy: Sinus Infection

Sinus Infections are super painful.  Completely stuffed up nose, a headache that makes you feel like your head may explode when you bend over…

But before you run to the doctor for a prescription, consider this:

My Aunt used to work for a large hospital, and she told me that an immunologist there admitted that the absolute best, most effective treatment for a sinus infection was warm salt water rinses. Antibiotics are always prescribed because there isn’t much money to be made in salt and water….I talk more about that in THIS POST.

Anyhow, sinus infections seem to be a big problem, especially in areas where dust and pollen are prevalent.  There are a few great ways to do a salt water rinse for your sinuses that are both inexpensive and comfortable.

One thing to remember is that it is essential to use purified or distilled water.

Tap water contains many contaminants, including the possibility of microscopic amoebas or parasites that can gain access to your brain via the sinuses.  Obviously this would be a very rare occurrence, but better safe than sorry!

As with almost every natural remedy, there is no harm in doing a salt water rinse just as a preventative measure.

I do one routinely after a windy day outside, mowing the lawn, raking leaves, sweeping out the garage, an evening around a campfire, or any other activity that might cause dust or irritants to enter the sinuses.

It’s also a great immune support.

My favorite product for doing this is the NeilMed.

It is easy to find at just about any grocery or pharmacy and is really easy to use.  Plus, in my experience, it doesn’t cause a gagging or drowning sensation like some others!

They come with a packet of sinus solution to mix with water, but you can just do 1/4 tsp salt per 8oz warm distilled water.  I heat the water in a tea kettle and then mix with room-temp water to achieve a warm, not hot, temperature.  Mix in the salt and stir until completely dissolved.

I like to use pure sea salt, as it doesn’t contain any additives.

You can also try the Neti Pot, although I have heard reports that this one can be a bit more uncomfortable to use.

I do this several times a day if I start to feel sick and it is pretty awesome/disgusting to see what comes out of your nose!   But hey, the sooner you get that junk out, the faster the salt can heal the infection!

If you have a sinus or nasal abnormality such as a deviated septum, it is imperative to catch a sinus infection immediately, and do preventative rinses often, as these problems cause the infection to be much more difficult to knock out once full-blown.

live well. be well.
