INTRODUCTION TO MYOTONIC DYSTROPHY

A myotonic dystrophy is a group of genetic disorders and types of muscular dystrophy and which is one of the most common kinds of it in adults. Signs and symptoms of this disorder can appear at any age but the most common age can be between 20-30 years. In this muscular disorder, there occurs progressive weakness and muscle wasting which gets worse over passing time. Myotonic dystrophy type one is more common than type two.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MYOTONIC DYSTROPHY

The two types of Myotonic dystrophy are usually similar but the symptoms can be slightly more severe than type two. However, some of the basic signs and symptoms which both involve are:

  • Muscle contractions are longer than normal, i.e. Myotonia
  • Speech is slurred
  • Lenses of the eye can become cloudy, i.e. Cataract
  • Electrical signals which control heartbeat can become defective, i.e. Cardiac conduction defects
  • Progressive muscle wasting
  • Progressive muscle weakness
  • Distal muscles, i.e. muscles that are far away from the center of the body are usually affected. For example, the face, legs, neck, and hands

There are certain other symptoms that can only occur in Myotonic dystrophy type 1 are constipation, trouble swallowing, or gallstones.

CAUSES OF MYOTONIC DYSTROPHY

The main causative factor behind Myotonic dystrophy is a genetic mutation. As myotonic dystrophy is of two types, i.e. type 1 and type 2, hence the mutation causing it is also of two types resulting in respective types. DM1 or type 1 is caused due to the alteration or mutation in the gene called DMPK, i.e. myotonic dystrophy protein kinase. Whereas DM2 or type 2 is caused due to mutation in the CNBP gene, i.e. nucleic acid binding protein gene. Certain proteins which are vital for many body functions are created by the instructions of the given genes. Hence any alteration or abnormal mutation in them causes the production of faulty protein or even protein might be absent which may result in affecting different organ systems like the brain, depending upon the functions of a certain protein.

DIAGNOSIS OF MYOTONIC DYSTROPHY

Neuromuscular disorders specialist doctors can often diagnose Myotonic dystrophy with the help of medical history and physical examination. Patterns of weakness, muscle wasting and myotonia are found here. Certain lab tests like EMG (Electromyography) can help in the confirmation of the diagnosis.

TREATMENT OF MYOTONIC DYSTROPHY

Conventionally there is no exact treatment for Myotonic dystrophy, type 1 or type 2. Medicines are given to control the disability and manage the symptoms like Mexitil is given to combat myotonia. For pain, your doctor would recommend certain anti-inflammatory medicines along with assistive devices for muscle weakness.
