According to the
American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s a difficult for many, as most of us are connected to someone who has been affected by the disease.
One such affected person is
Angelo Merendino, a New York-based photographer who lost his wife Jennifer to breast cancer. During the few years of his wife’s battle with the disease, he
documented her brave journey, creating a collection of images in an attempt to
“humanize the face of cancer.”
“People turn away from the day-to-day of cancer a little more which I understand. It’s painful
Before Jen and I went through this, I didn’t know what it was like either.”
Initially, Angelo planned on keeping the photos private and between the family, but he said that he and Jen ultimately
“chose to face it head on and put the information out there if people want it.”
