Katie Brenner has the perfect life: a flat in London, a glamorous job, and a super-cool Instagram feed.OK, so the truth is that she rents a tiny room with no space for a wardrobe, has a hideous commute to a lowly admin job, and the life she shares on Instagram isn’t really hers. But one day her dreams are bound to come true, aren’t they? Until her not-so-perfect life comes crashing down when her mega-successful boss Demeter gives her the sack. All Katie’s hopes are shattered. She has to move home to Somerset, where she helps her dad with his new glamping business. Then Demeter and her family book in for a holiday, and Katie sees her chance. But should she get revenge on the woman who ruined her dreams – or try to get her job back? Does Demeter – the woman who has everything – actually have such an idyllic life herself? Maybe they have more in common than it seems. And what’s wrong with not-so-perfect, anyway?Everybody loves Sophie Kinsella:

I loved the “Shopaholic” books written by Sophie Kinsella, so when I saw this book, My Not So Perfect Life, I was really interested in reading something of a different sort.  Kinsella has a knack for writing the type of “feel good” chick lit that I’ve really enjoyed in the past. Her books always seem like they are a great way to escape from all the bad news of the world, and I can always count on a good laugh. She has a gift of observing the funny details of life, that’s for sure!

Kinsella’s light-hearted humor makes My Not So Perfect Life a great page turner and I could totally relate to the characters as well.  I mean seriously, how many of us have elaborated on the truth – even if it’s just a little – just to make our lives a little more lively?  This story really hits on how social media can make you believe everyone has a better life than you when it’s really all just “smoke and mirrors”.

It’s tough to say much about the story without revealing spoilers…..hmmm……

So, the protagonist of the book is Katie and she is smart and ambitious. She’s flawed and likeable, but at the same time she’s also smart and working toward a goal. Her boss is Demeter, and while brilliant, she is also sometimes flaky and seems to have a perfect life.

Katie is living in London and her life is very exciting and glamorous – that is, on her Instagram page.  Her real life, however, isn’t so great with her lowly job, long commute, small flat, and barely enough money to get by.  After getting her hopes up that her life is turning around, Katie gets fired and moves back to the countryside to help her dad and stepmom in their adventure to start a glamour camping business a/k/a “Glamping”. Regardless of her situation, Katie tries to keep up appearances of her wonderful life on Instagram and doesn’t even admit that she’s been fired.

My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

The book really touches on the point that we should be true and authentic to ourselves and use a filter of reality when taking in what we see online.  It’s also another reminder of the old adage that we should never judge a book by its cover, no matter how great it might appear.

My Not So Perfect Life was a PERFECT beach read, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape for a few hours to read a light book cover to cover like I did! I guess Ms. Kinsella’s “stand alone” books are pretty fun too!
