Better to have loved and lost, than never loved.

Paul Starr, Irelands leading cardiologist dies in a car crash with a pregnant young women by his side.

United in their grief and the love of one man, four women are thrown together in an attempt to come to terms with life after Paul. They soon realise they never really knew him at all.

The love they shared for Paul in his life and which incensed a feeling of mistrust and dislike for each other, in his death turns into the very thing that bonds them and their children to each other forever.

As they begin to form unlikely friendships, Paul’s deaths proves to be the catalyst that enables them to become the people they always wanted to be.

I’ll admit – I love anything multiple – wives, children, whatever.  When I saw the title of today’s book available on NetGalley for review – My Husband’s Wives by Faith Hogan – I knew I just needed to read it. I was happy when I was approved!

So the story goes…… When renowned surgeon, Paul Starr is killed in a car accident in Dublin, he is found to leave behind not one, but three grieving widows.  His passenger is a young pregnant woman who survives but is not known by any of Paul’s widows. Each wife arrives at the hospital without any real knowledge of the existence of the other wives.

Through this story, the individual stories of Grace, Evie and Annalise are shared as each of these women say goodbye to the man they each loved.  Then, each woman is further surprised to learn the existence of another young female, a pregnant, Kasia, who was in the car at the time of the accident. The funeral arrangements begin their future connection.

By the end of My Husband’s Wives, I began to feel a fondness toward each of these main characters. As the story traveled from character to character, I loved seeing their insight into their lives. As we moved from character to character throughout the book, I could also see whose voice was speaking and which character we were with thanks to each of the characters being so well written.

My Husbands Wives is a compelling read as wives and lovers come together. It’s a soul-searching and heart-breaking story of a likable guy who is also a polygamist.  One of the characters in the book summed it up best by saying the best part of Paul Starr was what he left behind.
