Museum Hack

By Bigcitylittleblog @feakins

For those summer days where you want to take a break from the boozy brunches, get out of the sweltering heat, and immerse yourself a little culture, check out Museum Hack: a VIP-style tour group that organizes tongue-in-cheek story telling in the language of millennials. Completely void of pretentiousness, the Museum Hack team makes art museums fun, funny, and less of an information download.

Phil and I took of a tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side of Manhattan (c/o,) lead by our adorkable guides, Kate and Zak. They described it as a "tasting menu" of an otherwise overwhelmingly large Mecca of art. Anyone who uses foodie jargon is okay by me.

Zak and Kate both boasted a comical, modern way of story telling that makes art relatable to our current way of life. They swore, spoke of mythological affairs, and showed us ancient drug paraphernalia. This encouraged the group to relax, giggle, and appreciate the art in a new light. This is not a museum tour for your grandma- unless, of course, Nanny is one badass bitch.

And speaking of badass bitches, they even run a tour of the same name. It highlights amazing women in the arts- both the artists themselves and their subjects. It's perfect for a bachelorette party or a night out with the girls. With an array themes, Museum Hack truly offers something for everyone.

Our energetic tour guides also broke up the history lessons by letting us play some games. This is a unique approach to Museums that you should try next time you get a chance. Here's what we did:

Pretend that you're going to a party and choose an item in the museum that you want to bring. It could be anything: a sculpture, a subject of a painting, or artifacts. The possibilities are endless as you can use your imagination as much as you like. True to form, I picked the following sculpture who was described to me as "the life of the party and often the last girl at the party. She just wants to have the best time ever." Also true to form, I ended up winning this little contest.

2. Pick a partner, go into separate rooms, and take a picture of a painting that speaks to you. Bring them together and make an epic love story featuring the subjects of the paintings. I was drawn to this fabulous woman lounging in the wilderness, who seemed blissfully hungover and clearly had just had the night of her life. (Are we sensing a pattern here?)

3. Find your "spirit animal" within a room of statues. Take a photo with said statue in a pose that reflects why you are connected. I've always felt like somewhat of a Tigress, so this roaring jaguar just spoke to my soul. Phil, on the other hand, is definitely this chubby baby pissing in the fountain. #BoysWillBeBoys.

Museum Hack is a third party company with no formal affiliation to the museums. Check out their website at www.MuseumHack.com, like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter and Instagram, and get your tickets here.

I received a complimentary tour in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
