Saturday 20 July was not our lucky day. Here’s the story.
When we went to the dining room to have breakfast, I missed a step and slightly sprained my ankle. It immediately became clear that I wasn’t going to do a lot of walking that day. After the meal, Lars and I went back to our room to rest and to see if my ankle would get better. Or not…
Around half past 10 we decided to leave the hotel and make an excursion. My foot was slightly swollen and I could walk short distances. We thought it would be a good idea to drive to Tokaj and taste some wines. No long walks would be involved in that activity and if my condition became worse, we would simply drive back:

When we left, the weather was hot and humid. Less than a half hour later, it started raining. We tend to be very optimistic and continued our drive. And yes, when we finally arrived in Tokay about an hour later, it had stopped raining. That was the good news. The bad news was that Tokaj is a lot more touristic than we had thought. We couldn’t get rid of the car.
Lars and I left the center of Tokaj and drove to the outskirts of town. We saw a beautiful area with lots of vineyards and stopped to take pictures. What about finding a winery and tasting some wines? When we were back in the car, it started raining again. A lot. Still we remained optimistic and continued our excursion. When a thunderstorm started however, our enthusiasm disappeared.
We thought it would be better to go back. Maybe we could spend the rest of the afternoon in a spa. But driving back to our hotel proved to be a very big challenge. In the region around Tokaj, there was a cycling competition taking place and the police had blocked a lot of roads. Lars and I had to make a detour of almost 100 kilometers and we returned to our hotel in the beginning of the evening.
So, all I have from this “memorable” day are a couple of pictures of a vineyard…
