Every move comes with some of its own unique issues, tests and challenges. No two moving experiences are the same (and for that matter, no two homes or two people will be exactly alike either.)
For that reason, a move has to be approached in two different parts: One – handling the “stuff” which every move will tend to have in common, and Two – handling those unique and specific things which relate only to your move, your circumstances, and yourself rather than to anything or anyone else.
So let’s look at a good system for approaching these two parts of your moving process, and getting the most out of your planning, attention, time, and energy.
First off:
Generic Moving — What Everyone Has in Common
(1) Your Stuff:
No matter who you are or where you were living, you are bound to have some belongings that need to be dealt with. It may be as little as a suitcase full, or as much as two truckloads. Either way if you’re moving homes you will need to make a plan for what to do with these belongings.
You have two options to start with: Get rid of your belongings, or move them across to your new location.
Either one of these decisions carries with it pros and cons. Most of us could afford to get rid of some unnecessary stuff in the process of moving homes, but almost none of us would want to get rid of it all. Draw up a complete inventory of what you own. Be ruthlessly efficient and decide what stays and what goes.
(2) Dealing With Your Old Home & Finding Your New One:
If you’ve been living in any kind of house or flat before your decision to move to your new home (and let’s face it, you have), then you’re going to need to wrap up your business and tie off any loose ends which exist with your old home before moving on. This can be as time consuming as finding and contacting an estate agents, finding a new buyer, arranging viewings etc. or as simple as cleaning your carpets and giving your landlord notice.
Either way, you need to do what you need to do.
The second part of this equation is obviously that you will also need to find a new home. The specifics of what kind of home you look for will vary, but realize that this not something which you can rush if you want to be happy with where you end up.
Your Move – Things Which Are Specific To You
(1) The layout of your new home:
Moving is one of the best and most powerful opportunities that life ever gives us to change and improve the setting of our day to day existence. We can move on from all of the mess and clutter that we left in our old homes, we can create our own castle or palace and we can do it all in our own image. Along with this comes the ability to shrug off some of the bad habits or troubles of our past lives as well and have a fresh start.
But this gift depends on you putting in the time and effort. If you just arrive at your new home with a huge pile of unlabelled boxes and no clear plan for what to do, then you’re setting yourself up for a hard uphill climb.
Be organized. Get creative, have fun, and plan your ideal layout for your new home. Do an inventory of your belongings. Decide what stays, what goes, and what goes where. Pack everything carefully and label each box carefully – describing what’s in it and what room it should go in.
(2) Where You Live:
Whether it’s your job, your school, your friends, family, or doctor, you’ll probably want to make sure that your new home is within the right kind of distance from the places that you need to go and the people who you want to see.
On the other hand, maybe you want to get away from it all. Have a complete fresh start in a faraway land.
Only you will know the answer to this, but you need to realize that wherever you end up – you’ll likely be there for some time. You should have total respect for how serious this decision is. Treat it as an opportunity to get closer to what matters, or further from what doesn’t.
