Amanda Seyfried in Gone (2012)
As film reviewers or even film going public, do you make an effort to watch bad movies?
In a recent discussion to increase views and readership on my website, a friend of mine told me to watch more bad movies. He said “It may take years off your life, but your website will be more interesting because of it”. I’m not so sure I agree with his comment and I’ll tell you why.

- I’m not getting Paid
This is of course the strongest argument of all. The reviewers for DVDTalk, IGN, Variety…They all get paid to watch bad films. If I knew a review of a terrible film was going to bring me the money, I’d be all for it. Wouldn’t that showing of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D be a little more enjoyable if you weren’t doing it just to waste time?
2. Life is short
We’re only going to be alive for so long, so why on earth should I subject myself to something bad. What’s 120 minutes you ask? 120 minutes that could be spent doing something enjoyable. Shouldn’t our entertainment be enjoyable?
3. Cost
Listen, while I won’t argue that there’s plenty of bad movies on Netflix…that subscription cost money. Redbox, you say? Between the gas and rental price why on Earth would I go out of my way? Movie Theater? Forget about it. With the economy the way it is, who wants to dish out money for something that isn’t going to be the best possible experience.
Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012)
Of course there’s fellow bloggers who will slog through the garbage. Fogs Movie Reviews will go see every film during a given weekend. It doesn’t matter the rating. Public Transportation Snob did a mini-marathon of the biggest Hollywood flops. I don’t have the patience for that, but he did it. I believe everyone has their own niche. Here at ImpassionedCinema, I try to review and cover movies that I have the most interest in. Did I watch some bad movies this year that I didn’t bother to review here? Sure did…(The FP and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) for starters.
Do you feel its your duty to watch bad movies?
