Movie Confessions Blogathon

Nostra at My Film Views ‘the master of blog-a-thons’ has a new blog-a-thon. This time the topic of choice is movie confessions. I’ve seen a few other bloggers responses to this blog-a-thon and I’ve been looking forward to tossing my hat into the ring.

There’s a series of questions below that need answering. Away we go.

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

Movie Confessions Blogathon

When I think of all the classic movies I’ve seen there’s just some I can’t get into. No matter how many tries I’ve given it. The first possible answer that came to my mind was Sunset Boulevard. I have never cared for the movie and I vastly prefer Double Indemnity as Billy Wilder’s best. That being said…I have been able to finish it. No the guilty movie is 8 1/2. Hailed as one of the greatest foreign films of all-time, I have never been through the entire film after four attempts at watching it. I did enjoy Federico Fellini’s Armacord, so it’s not a problem with the director. I guess it’s the lack of focus that is off-putting.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

I really struggled with this list because over the past few years I’ve made it a point to watch ‘classics’ I hadn’t seen yet. Here’s some movies I thought were glaring due to their inclusion on AFI lists and foreign film lists.

1. Metropolis
2. On the Waterfront
3. It Happened One Night
4. The Graduate
5. The Treasure of Sierra Madre
6. The French Connection
7. City Lights
8. Wild Strawberries
9. Life is Beautiful
10. Jules and Jim

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

Probably when I was younger I would catch the end of another movie after one movie ended. Nowadays I make it a point to go back down and pay for a second movie if we decide to do a double feature day.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

Movie Confessions Blogathon

I had a discussion recently with Dirty With Class about a particular Actress and I’m going to include her here. I believe Angelina Jolie is highly overrated. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film where I’ve enjoyed her performance and I just don’t think she’s been in many good films. Why is her casting as Maleficent a good thing? Or why would you ever want her to direct 50 Shades of Grey? I continue to see her name in the headlines and I just can’t understand why.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

Movie Confessions Blogathon

Add me to the list of people who have never seen a David Lynch movie. I know he’s an iconic director with an impeccable talent for creating terrifying musical accompaniment to many of his films. It’s just that I’ve always either been told his movies are too weird or strange to enjoy. I remember turning on Blue Velvet intending that to be the first Lynch movie I’d ever watch. Then I read the synopsis and I really didn’t feel like seeing it. I’m sure I’ll see one of his films someday. Just not in a rush.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

I generally go with the critics and I have a lot of movies that have scored well either on RT or in reviews. There are films in my collection that I really enjoy, that aren’t perfect like The Fountain, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Flash Gordon. I think some of those would fall under cult classics though. So honestly I can’t really come up with an answer for this one.

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

No I don’t think so…I hate those people. Haha. One time though I was so angry at someone answering a phone call during King Kong that I yelled, ‘Turn off your f^$king phone!’ Of course the people I was with thought we were going to get killed, but we survived.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

Movie Confessions Blogathon

I’ve tried to be a lot better at this. I would normally just ignore movies with my favorite actors if it got bad reviews. One that I avoided was Nine. I love Daniel Day Lewis, but I just couldn’t get myself to see it. I’ve watch some bad Seth Rogen movies recently just because he appeared in the films. I think I would blind buy any Jimmy Stewart film. Any film I see him in is fantastic.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

This has never been a problem for me since I grew up watching Anime. I just knew that if I wanted to watch something I had to take it subs and all. I find some subs are done so well that I forget that I’m actually reading and just imagine the actors saying the words. That’s the best feeling.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

Movie Confessions Blogathon

A lot. I was a lot worse when it came to buying DVD’s than with Blu-rays. There’s countless DVD’s in the other room I’ve never watched fully like…Reds, Sunshine Cleaning…etc. At the time I buy them they sound like a good idea, but unless I watch something the week I get it in, it’s very rare I’ll go back and be excited about it again. Which is terrible I know.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

Blu-ray: Wanted, Watchmen, Transformers

DVD: Marie Antoinette

Those are the ones I remember off-hand. I keep the three Blu-ray because they were either gifts or good sound demos. Not that I feel like watching them again.

Marie Antoinette is because it’s a Sofia Coppola movie. That’s one of the few reasons.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

I live in an apartment so all five of my speakers are facing right at me. It’s a disappointing setup, but someday I’ll be able to listen to all movies all over again!
