Moebius syndrome is a rare mental disorder that occurs as a result of weakness or paralysis of many nerves, especially the sixth (abducens) and seventh (facial) nerves. Other cranial nerves are also sometimes affected. The problem is present at birth (congenital). If the seventh nerve is affected, people with Moebius syndrome cannot smile, frown, lift their lips, raise their eyebrows, or close their eyes. If the sixth nerve is affected, the eye cannot protrude beyond the center. Other abnormalities include poor development of the pectoral muscles and leg defects. Moebius Syndrome is not progressive. The reason is unclear. It often appears to happen randomly. It was first described by Von Graefe in 1880 and Moebius in 1888.
