Moirang is a religious place and
a municipal council, which is located in the Bishnupur district of Manipur,
located at a distance of 45 km from Imphal, the capital city of the state.
The
place is the home to Meithei culture and an important tourist destination of
Manipur. Moirang is regarded as one of the popular cultural and historical
centre of the state. The place played a significant role in the freedom
struggle of India.
Due to the water bodies located
close to this town, the place is very rich in flora and fauna. As for this
reason, the town is also popular among the ecologists and bird watchers apart
from the general backpackers. Moirang is inhabited by diverse tribal groups. The
major part of the population comprises of Meitei tribe. The rest comprises of
Naga, Zou, Kom, Kabui, Muslims, Gangte, Vaiphei etc. All of these groups of
people speak the Meiteilon language. An interesting feature of this town is a
village called Ngangkhaleikai, where the traditional cloth worn by the Khamba
and Nongban are still preserved.
Attractions
INA Memorial Museum- The memorial museum is an important tourist
attraction of the place. The site was structured to honor the unfurling of the
Indian flag by Indian National Army (INA), under the leadership of Netaji
Subash Chandra Bose. At this place, the flag of the INA was first hoisted on
April 14, 1944. The museum houses a collection of letters, badges of ranks,
photographs and other memorabilia of the martyrs of the INA, whose headquarter
was established over here during the World War II.
Lord Thangling Temple- The temple is dedicated to the traditional
deity of Moirang, Ebudhou Thangjing. This religious site receives a large
number of devotees during the festival of Lai Haroba. During the festival,
tourists will witness the charming Khanba-Thobi dance, which is a perfect
example of Manipuri folk culture. The dance form is celebrated by the female
dancers and singers, who wear colorful traditional clothes during this time.
Loktak Lake- It is a major tourist attraction of the region, which is inhabited by a diverse species of floating vegetation. It is one of the largest fresh water lakes in the country. This fresh water lake is also a part of the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is home to the endangered species of brow-antlered deer along with other species of wildlife.
Shopping- The Moirang Market acts as the chief market for the local people of the surrounding region. The place is a chief trading centre, which is now being further expanded into a major trading center under Planning and Development Authority (PDA) that would be implemented by the Municipal Council of this place. Tourists can buy some interesting souvenirs and traditional items at this market.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the place is during the months of May to September.

By Train: The nearest railway station to the place is Dimapur, located at a distance of about 250 km. The station is conducts regular trains to various major parts in India. Bus and taxi services are available from the station to the place.
By Road: The place is easily accessible from Imphal, located at a distance of about 45 km. Imphal is well linked by roads to places like Shillong, Itanagar, Guwahati, Kohima, Aizwal etc.
