What if you could ask God anything? What would you ask? And how would He answer? Chelsea Chambers is on her own. After a public split from her NFL superstar husband, Chelsea takes a bold step out of the limelight and behind the counter of the Higher Grounds Café, an old-fashioned coffee shop in dire need of reinvention. But when her courage, expert planning, and out-of-this-world cupcakes fail to pay the bills, this newly single mom finds herself desperate for help. Better yet, a miracle. Then a curious stranger lands at Chelsea’s door, and with him, an even more curious string of events. Soon, customers are flocking to the Higher Grounds Café, and not just for the cupcakes and cappuccino. They’ve come for the internet connection to the divine. Now the café has become the go-to place for people in search of answers to life’s biggest questions. When a catastrophe strikes and her ex comes calling, Chelsea begins to wonder if the whole universe is conspiring against her quest to make it on her own. After a shocking discovery opens her eyes to the unseen world around her, Chelsea finds the courage to ask God a question of her own. Heaven answers in a most unexpected way.
I’ve been reading Max Lucado’s books for years, but I had never read any of his fictional books until now. and let me just say I wasn’t disappointed. The main character of Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe is Chelsea Chambers, who has inherited her mother’s cafe. The business had been in the family for generations, but Chelsea discovers a huge debt – a whopping $86,000! This debt is discovered by Chelsea right after separating from her cheating NFL superstar husband. While at first, I thought the story line a bit hokey, I warmed up to the idea as the plot went on.
The cafe becomes a place where people go in search of answers to life’s biggest questions – they can have one prayer request answered by God – a direct internet line to God who offers to answer the heartfelt prayers of customers. (I actually recognized a couple of my own questions in some of those posted to the God Blog.)
The book discusses forgiveness, second chances, and prayer. It also gives us a very interesting perspective on how angels may work in our life. And don’t be fooled – Chelsea’s staff are more than meet the eye too (but you’ll have to read the book to learn what I mean by that). I love that Mr. Lucado used fiction to share powerful messages of truth. I think this book could easily help an unbeliever or someone struggling in their faith.
The author reminds us about the battle raging between darkness and light and he also reminds us that God is always on our side. We are reminded that God has a plan and purpose for our lives, but we don’t always see it working. From our perspective, things can look convoluted but from God’s view, things are much more accurate and clear. The book is a great reminder that prayers are never wasted and that they are powerful. While God hears every prayer, He may not act on them immediately and when he does act, He might just give us a different answer.
I received this book in paperback from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I also received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions I have expressed are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
