MET Costume Gala – Hits and Misses

Posted on the 07 May 2013 by Jenmcd @jen_mcdonnell

There were plenty more misses than hits, but mostly because everyone played it too safe. The theme was “punk” — how exactly does this qualify, Kate Upton?! There were some that I didn’t love but I still appreciated the risk they took, including Miley Cyrus, Nicole Richie, Kerry Washington, Elle Fanning. Here are my picks for the top five best and worst:

BEST: Cameron Diaz
She stole the show with her backless blue Stella McCartney and spiked belt. LOVE!

BEST: Nina Dobrev
I’m usually not a huge Monique Lhuillier fan, but I love what she put the Vampire Diaries star in. The perfect blend of punk and pretty!

BEST: Sarah Jessica Parker
Never one to pass up a good theme, SJP killed it in a pretty Giles Deacon gown and outrageous Philip Treacy headpiece. This is exactly the kind of outfit the MET Gala is all about.

BEST: Anne Hathaway
Everyone made a big deal about Anne’s shockingly blonde ‘do, but I couldn’t take my eyes off her killer Valentino gown.

BEST: Kirsten Dunst
It takes a lot (a lot!) for me to say I like a gown with feathers, which are way too played out at this point, but I’m making an exception for Kirsten’s Louis Vuitton.

WORST: Gwyneth Paltrow
At first glance, I didn’t hate GOOP’s Valentino Couture gown. But then I noticed the bunching and the awkward way she was carrying herself, and it just stopped working for me.

WORST: Madonna
Nothing screams “desperate” quite like Madge’s Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci jacket and ripped stockings.

WORST: Ashley Oslen
I know making fun of an Olsen twin’s fashion is like shooting fish in a barrel, but COME ON!

WORST: Ashley Green
Of course she wore Marchesa and tried to look like a princess. Of COURSE she did!
