A messy play and baking post using Cadbury chocolate
I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias and their client.As a member of Collective Bias I was recently selected to shop for Cadbury chocolate in my local Asda for which I had chosen to do a messy play and baking activity with my children. With the summer holidays starting I thought this would be a really fun way to start the holiday and something they could both get involved in together.
On our shopping trip we purchased lots of items for some fun messy play activities. We bought different types of jelly and some Freddo chocolate bars to hide in it, some chocolate fingers which I wanted to freeze in big ice cubes and some drinking chocolate to make chocolate play dough. We also purchased baking ingredients and some dairy milk to make some muffins. You can see our Google+ Album showing our shopping trip here.
Messy Play
For the chocolate based messy play activities I made the following:
1. Giant ice-cubes with chocolate fingers (or fish fingers as Little Mr A insisted on calling them!) frozen into the middle – this had to be done in a couple of stages as with too much water the fingers kept rising to the top.
2. Two different colours of jelly with a Freddo hidden inside which had to be ‘dug’ out. Again I had to do this in a couple of stages. I made the first lot of jelly then, once set put the Freddo in the middle and then topped up with a different colour and let that set.
3. Chocolate play dough – To make this I mixed 2 cups of flour with 1 cup of drinking chocolate, 1 tablespoon of oil and 1/2 cup of water. This seemed to make a good consistency for play and shaping. I left it in the fridge for a good half an hour before using it and it seemed to be just about right. The play dough smelt so chocolatey and delicious I could have sat and eaten it!
Little Mr A can be very funny about getting messy and today was one of those days. He didn’t want to get involved in anything really messy so I gave him the chocolate play dough and some chocolate fingers to play with and explore.
Little Miss A on the other hand loves it! As soon as I got out the tuff spot she became very excited and couldn’t wait to get started. I put the jelly and ice cubes onto the tuff spot and let her explore. It didn’t take her long to find the Freddo in the jelly and have a good taste of him!
I also let her have a feel of the play dough but she just wanted to eat it all so I think I will leave this until she is a little older.
Baking
After messy play Little Mr A and I made some Dairy Milk chunk muffins. The recipe is as follows:
Ingredients:-
- 300g Self Raising Flour
- 50g Butter
- 80g Caster Sugar
- 150g Dairy Milk
- 2 Eggs
- 225ml Milk
Recipe:-
- Rub butter into flour until it becomes breadcrumb like
- Stir in the caster sugar and chunks of chocolate
- In a separate bowl mix together the eggs and milk
- Pour the eggs and milk into the dry ingredients and mix well
- Place into muffin cases and bake for 20 minutes until slightly golden and cooked through
- Leave to cool for 10 minutes then enjoy!
The muffins turned out really well and the Dairy Milk worked perfectly in them. Because we had left the chunks quite large they had slightly melted but there were still quite big lumps of chocolate in the muffins. They went down very well with the whole family and Big Mr A was very pleased to come home to some homemade cakes!
