On October 1st, 2013, all healthcare providers will be required to submit new claims on a new CMS-1500 form. Any claims submitted on the old form after this date will be rejected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. All users of Medisoft software products who submit paper claims to CMS will be required to update their Medisoft software to be able to use the new CMS-1500 forms.
From the NUCC website -
“The NUCC recommended timeline for transitioning to the 0212 version of the 1500 Claim Form is as follows:
- June 1, 2013 – Health plans, clearinghouses, and other information support vendors are ready to handle and accept the revised (02/12) 1500 Claim Form.
- June 1 – October 1, 2013 – Providers can use either the current (08/05) or the revised (02/12) 1500 Claim Form. Health plans, clearinghouses, and billing vendors are able to accept and process either version of the form.
- October 1, 2013 – The current (08/05) 1500 Claim Form is discontinued; only the revised (02/12) 1500 Claim Form is to be used. All rebilling of claims will be on the revised (02/12) 1500 Claim Form from this date forward, even though earlier submissions may have been on the current (08/05) 1500 Claim Form.”
Form changes to accommodate ICD-10
The CMS-1500 form was changed to accommodate the reporting needs for ICD-10. It was also done to bring the form into alignment with the Accredited Standards Committee X12 (ASC X12) Health Care Claim: Professional (837P) Version 5010 Technical Report Type 3. This will aid the adoption of the ICD-10 standard set to come online in October 2014.
Medisoft software users must update to be ready
All versions of the Medisoft software previous to Medisoft v19 are not compatible with the new CMS-1500 form. This means that users of the Medisoft need to update their software to be ready for the changes coming October 1st, 2013. However, this doesn’t mean that you must purchase Medisoft v19. The forms in your current system can be updated to accommodate the new form. Regardless, if you submit paper claims to CMS, you must update your form or your claims will be rejected.
