The other day, I walked past a local beauticians and there was a sign outside offering ‘special deals’ on male grooming treatments, including manicures and pedicures. I had no idea what they were, to be honest (I have since been enlightened that one is a treatment for the hands and one for the feet). I was taken aback, to say the least. It would never occur to me to get my nails filed and painted – I mean, what’s wrong with some good, old-fashioned clippers at home? Am I missing something here?
And if that wasn’t surprising enough, I then read in the paper just days later that male beauty treatments had soared in popularity, with 30% more men going for pedicures. Each to their own, and all that – but I fail to see the point. I keep my nails clean and tidy – what more do we need to do? Now I don’t pretend to know what women want (if only I did!) but I suspect that many would find a heavily moisturised, perfectly preened man a bit of a turn-off? No?
As I said, each to their own. If I want to treat myself, I think I’ll stick to a pie and a pint at my local!
