What is a primer?
A primer simply means a specific kind of cream or lotion that is applied on the face before another cosmetic is used. The purpose of a primer is to ensure that the amount of time for which the other cosmetic lasts on the face remains long enough. There are specific kinds of primers for different kinds of cosmetics: foundation primers, eyelid primers, lip primers, and mascara primers.
Foundation Primers work mostly like moisturisers, or, can even be oil absorbent to create more of a matte appearance. There are also ranges that come in with different kinds of anti-oxidants and natural extracts, and are largely divided into water-based and silicon-based primers. They can come in with sun block, with or without preservatives, fragrances and color that can work to improve your skin-tone. There are also some mineral-based primers.

Primers used for the eyelid are more specific to skin near the eyes –which is thinner and more delicate in comparison with the rest of your face. They work perfectly to deal with the application of eye-shadows, to prevent it from accumulating in the creases of your eyelids, help even out the skin tone and intensify the color range. Primers used for mascara are entirely to help the mascara last longer with a more fully finished look, and also helps avoid flaking and smudging of the mascara. Lip primers work to smoothen out the lips, and help let the color last long.

How do you apply a primer?
Even though a primer is a value addition for the benefit of your skin, it has to be applied right. Here are a few steps to help you work with primers!
1. Moisturise first: Dry skin needs moisturiser, so be sure to use something that is light enough. Apply moisturiser and sit for a few moments so it gets absorbed.
2. Apply the primer: Take a small amount – no more than the average Cadbury Gems’ size. Take a damp foundation sponge – preferably a wedge sponge. Dab it onto your face, starting under your eyes and moving onto your nose, and then covering your face in gentle movements.
3. Blend the primer: Use the sponge to blend the primer by covering all parts of your face. Try to be even in the application, though a little more over larger pores or over your T-zone isn’t an issue.
4. Move onto the next step: After a few minutes, your primer will dry up. At this stage, specific primers for your eyes/lips/mascara can be applied in the same manner as the above mentioned steps. Once it all dries out, apply foundation, concealer and all the other elements you like!
