I’ve been off on more gastronomical adventures lately for eHarmony’s Great Date Guide and, after checking out Billykart Kitchen at Annerley, I was thrilled to have an excuse to head back to Madame Wu for dinner.
With views overlooking the city’s iconic Story Bridge, Madame Wu proclaims itself to be a bar and restaurant best suited for those with “exquisite taste and a desire for the exotic”.
Boasting a modern Asian silhouette, the restaurant’s mood lighting, romantic view and magnificent bamboo entrance with sculptured tree will transport you to a far-off place.
And if that doesn’t do it for you, head for the bar with its extensive wine cellar, signature cocktail list and resident Sommelier and Mixologist (cocktail maker).
While we perused the menu and admired the view, I started with a Summertime Punch mocktail ($10) which was a tantalising blend of pineapple and cranberry juice mixed with a passionfruit and watermelon puree.
As well as cocktails and mocktails, they also have share jugs available so we shared a Gorgeous Geisha White Sangria (Ketel One vodka, pavan, strawberries and rose-water topped with sparkling wine and soda water).
Food wise, we settled on a mixture of share plates including the pumpkin, sweet potato & water chestnut rice noodle roll ($10); pan-fried scallop dumplings, verjus butter, black tobiko ($20); and Moreton Bay bug dumpling, xo & lime ($18).
We finished dinner off with the Crispy pork hock, stir fried kim chi and apple (the meat melted in our mouths!) and the Fried eggplant in Sichuan broth. Both were delicious but the Moreton Bay bug dumplings and pork were definitely my favorite.
While our meals and drinks didn’t come in at under $50 a couple, they were about $50 per person, so Madame Wu is definitely one to put on your list when you’re out to impress and ready to spend a little more.
