Last week Little Miss A encountered her first, of what I hope will be many, bakes.
She is very fussy at the moment about what she wants to play with so I am trying lots of different ways to keep her amused for longer than two minutes!
I got her all of the ingredients ready to make some biscuits whilst she popped on her brother's chef outfit.
She had a great time mixing all of the ingredients together with her brother's little wooden spoon. She spent a good 10 minutes or so mixing until I stepped in to help her bring it all together.
Once we had the mixture together she 'helped' to squish it out with the rolling pin before we cut out the biscuits ready for baking.
As with all children, once she had realised she could eat it, there was no stopping her! Everything she could grab went into her mouth (hence why I avoided eating the end result!).
After lunch and, once the biscuits had cooled down, she set about decorating them with some icing and chocolate sprinkles. Again, she realised she could eat the chocolate and more went in her mouth than on the biscuits!
She was really pleased with her first attempt and both her and Little Mr A enjoyed eating them.
I am hoping it will be a regular thing we can do together.
Little Mr A has always enjoyed making cakes and biscuits with us right from a young age, although we didn't get to do it that often as I was working three days a week. He would often come home with a biscuit he had decorated at nursery and was always very proud of his efforts!
As he gets older he is enjoying helping out with the cooking even more and, when we have time at the weekend, I will sometimes let him cook tea (with my assistance!).
I think it is a great thing to encourage your children to do, particularly if they love it as much as mine do. It is a great sensory activity for little ones and, as they get older you can incorporate maths into it with weighing out the ingredients and setting cooking times.
