Though it's not normally something we'd edge towards, The Luka State, formed of three young musicians, manage to form a light and delightful blend of a youthful U2, and a new spin on folkish bands like Mumford & Sons. Their energetic sound in Matter Of Time is something slightly different to the mainstream currently and well worthy of a good listen.
You'll immediately notice the references to U2. The vocal is just as dusty as that of Bono, and the music is really not too far off the sort of thing that they'd manage to make, although, as we previously suggested, the constant energy surrounding the song is one of youth.
However, in suggesting that they are like U2, they do fail to reach the soaring heights that U2 manage and, at times, we'll be honest, it does leave us wanting that little bit more with not much but THAT name in mind.
Their sound is fresh though, and something that hasn't really been current for quite some time. The fact is, we're living in a very reminiscent time when it comes to music and, with acts like Jake Bugg, coming to the forefront, we've got to be honest and suggest that we don't see why The Luka State, given the right backing in terms of a recording contract, decent exposure, and a cracking music video and single, couldn't be part of the revolution.
We feel that this isn't the best that they could offer and will be waiting in hope that they offer something a little more powerful and awe-inspiring soon, although, that is surely not to suggest that this band are at all bad, or that we wouldn't listen to them again, and again!
Paul.
