This post is waaaaay overdue!
About 2 weeks ago, I was invited to attend a focus group that marked the launch of the Always #LikeAGirl campaign, held at Le Palanka restaurant in Nairobi. I’d always seen the #LikeAGirl Youtube video floating around the web for some time, and that evening, I got a good understanding of what it was really about.
How often do you hear people being told that they ‘fight like a girl, run like a girl or throw like a girl?’. The #LikeAGirl campaign strives to bring awareness to global girl empowerment through puberty education to adolescent girls. This campaign seeks to drive a movement to change the phrase from an insult (and portraying girls as weak and inferior) into a celebration of the strength, talent and character of every girl. That during the puberty/adolescent years of a girl’s life, her self confidence significantly reduces. The campaign thus strives to champion girls to maintain that self confidence even during puberty as a celebration of their transition to woman hood.
The evening was full of laughs with ladies telling stories of their adolescent years. :-)
Join in the movement guys! Let’s champion girl empowerment and self confidence and show me what you’ve done #LikeAGirl. :-)
