Last Portrait Class of the Year - Pauline - II

By Pmeurice
Last Portrait class of the year at Heatherley.
Only one session with the model in this pose : I decided to close the 'academic' year with a pastel painting. Before the class, I had no idea on what color scheme had been chosen by our tutor... I then went to the class with a basic selection of hard and soft pastels, darks and lights, and some of my favorite colors.
Life portrait using pastel was new to me. I loved it! I needed to be quite focus at the start of the portrait : with oil, we can correct any feature at any time; with pastel, we can't miss the key features in the initial drawing if we aim for likeness. After a tense moment in the drawing start, I found back what I love with this medium: a progressive and sensual approach of color, the touch of the paper, drawing and painting with the powder, and the ability to try or change color at will. I dived into this  lovely experience. A great day.
Here is the painting, at the end of the session:

Pastel (50 X 45 cm)

I might not have the change to enroll for the next term - as I expect a busy first quarter in the next year... But I found in portraiture a new way to engage with Humanity and Art. This year at Heatherley and the exchanges with a great tutor (Allan Ramsay) have triggered more motivation... More than ever, I want to paint.
