Those who know me know my love for non-vegetarian and at the same time I love veggies too! My first experience with Thali was in 1990, when I came to Delhi with my school friends. We went to Madras Hotel in CP( non-existent now) and had their unlimited thali for just Rs35. In Bihar serving various types of subji and other stuff in thali is not very common. After Madras Hotel, my work took me places in South India and I gorged on “Thali” in every city!Last year, I went to rajshthan and traveled across the state for my photography assignment. I ended up having Thali each day and I simply loved it! Dal bati churma and ker sangria was amongst my favorite dish and I quite enjoyed it.
I got an invite from Kathputl and they serve marwadi food in thali system. My love for “thalis” in Rajasthan got me interested for this place. The moment you step inside, you will get the feel of Rajasthan. Beautifully done interiors and servers were dressed in typical Rajasthani attire and in background one can hear Rajasthani folk songs.
The name of the restaurant - “Kathputli” (wooden puppet) is native to Rajasthan and is the most popular form of entertainment. This place serves Marwari food from the marwar region of rajasthan, and hence wanted a name that could be fun,peppy and ethnic at the same time – that is how this restaurant was coined “Kathputli”The food is less oily and spicy as compared to regular Marwari food and they shared that ”Delhi being a very health conscious state, we decided to keep it healthy by not compromising on the taste”My welcome drink was Pudina pani along with spicy crispy papad. I enjoyed it as it was refreshing! Here they have unlimited thali system and the best part about the thali is that you cab get unlimited servings of whatever you like the most.
We were served a lot of stuff and each item in the plate was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed sarson ka saag which is very different from what you get in Punjabi household. Ker sangria ka achar was another delicious item. Dal bati chutma and the gate ki sabji were delicious and they were the highlights of the meal. Khichdi was simple yet flavorful.We finished our meal with basundi and moong dal ka halwa and both were excellent and not too sweet! I would highly recommend this place if you want great homemade Marwari food that is served with lots of love and care!
