Hey guys! It’s Tuesday and that means you get another update on my training for the past week…. of course, there’s a little bump in the road with training and I’ll tell you why. I’m going back to my hometown – Cleveland, Ohio – in just a couple of weeks. Because I was a 2015 Cleveland Marathon Race Ambassador and because the same people are putting on another race the weekend I’ll be up visiting, I agreed to do a race called the “Perfect 10″.
Now before I tell you anything else, let me back up: I never ran when I lived in Cleveland and in fact, when I moved to Florida in 2000, I was still smoking cigarettes! Heck, back then, there was no way I was running anywhere, anytime unless maybe if someone was chasing me. I started running here in Florida in 2008, and I’ve participated in an uncountable number of 5k’s, a whole bunch of 10k’s, exactly 33 half marathons to date and zero full marathons…..YET. I have never, not once, ever, ever, ever done a 10 mile run. I’ve never heard of a “10 miler” and I’ve even asked some of my running friends and they haven’t either – maybe it’s an Ohio thing?
So, when I agreed to do this race in Ohio, I immediately thought to myself “it’s a 5k / 10k. Okay, I’ll do the 10k because my training plan calls for a 7 mile run that weekend, so I’ll just run around the block after I do the 10k (6.250 miles) and get my 7 miles”. Hello Debi – the race is called the “Perfect 10 MILER”; the website is http://www.perfect10miler.com. What else could be more clear about the fact that it wasn’t a 10k, but instead, a 10 MILER?
Now you understand the bump in my training road. Instead of 7 miles, I’ll be doing 10 miles. UGH. I promised myself I would never do another race without being properly trained for it, so I was kind of ticked at myself. I talked it over with a friend of mine who is a certified running coach and she helped me modify – “amp up” – the training plan so that I can do the 10 miler without it being too much of a hassle for me. For the next three weeks, I’ll be posting weeks 12-14 of the training plan so you can see what I was supposed to do, and what I’m actually doing.
So now that I’ve blabbered on, I’ll give you my training report for the week, short and sweet, with a bunch of pictures. I just finished week #12 of the Hal Higdon’s “Novice Supreme” 30 Week Full Marathon Training Plan so follow along:
Monday, I rested
Tuesday I ran 3 miles in 40:38:
Wednesday: Didn’t run
Thursday I ran 3 miles in 40:27:
Friday I ran Wednesday’s 3 miles, except I ran 4 miles instead in 54:09:
Saturday instead of the 6 miles on the training plan, I stepped it up and ran 6.5 miles in 1:30:46:
I did it! I did it! I can’t even believe it myself! I completed the training plan and then some! I’m very happy that my prayers are being answered, that I am persevering and that God is giving me the strength to tackle the task at hand.
WEIGHT/EATING: I’ve stepped up my water intake – still struggling, but doing better than before. One day I even drank 80 ounces of water and when I added up my intake for the day I surprised myself! I’m on the third week of staying on track with my eating too. The first week I lost 3.4 pounds, the second week I lost 3.6 pounds, and last week I lost 1 pound. I almost said “only” but I lost, I didn’t gain, so I’m good. We have chosen Sunday as our “cheat day” since we weigh in on Sunday mornings so I’m not starving myself or skipping meals or anything. I’m very happy with the results so far, and I’m excited to be heading into week 4 of eating right, and week #13 of the training plan!
Next week I have to start adding cross-training, so that should be interesting. I’ll figure all that out next week!
Until next Tuesday….happy running!
