Hungry Hound Pub + Kitchen & Niner Ichi Nana

We were invited to have dinner at this great-looking place called Hungry Hound. Alvie and I were happy the invite was for four so we got to bring along Jeric and Patricia. This is another establishment of Erwan Heussaff and I am very thankful for the invites because I think I've visited them all by now. Is there something else I haven't visited? There might be. I'm really the worst when it comes to restaurant news, ironically. Haha.
After a bit of a walk to Globe tower in the fort, we got to the place ready for dinner. Before this, I never knew where the Globe tower was, or that it existed.

Check out this super-cool pic of um.. the utensils. Haha but you can see how cozy the place is. Dinner by candlelight any time of the night, and interiors that make you just want to relax, share stories, and enjoy.

Duck Fat Fries, P288.00

pimenton dulce, rosemary, garlic confit, parmesan
Duck fat. Fries. Two ideas that would make any health-conscious person cringe. Luckily, I decided not to waste our dinner by depriving myself! The fries were good, and I understood why this was a bestseller. It was very different from regular fries, I couldn't put my finger on why, but it was a good change. Delicious.

Apple, Blue & Bacon, P355.00

arugula, glazed walnuts, raisin, bacon jam, crushed garlic crouton
Who says you need all-unhealthy food to indulge. This salad made the night a bit less guilt-inducing, and it was certainly a treat, except for the raisins. I never liked raisins, but the salad was filled with enough of other good stuff for me to enjoy. Walnuts and blue cheese, in particular, were in abundance.

Sriracha Buffalo Wings, P389.00

More blue cheese! The sauce wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped, but it went well enough with the wings. The wings had a mild hint of sriracha. What I liked best about this were the fried shitake mushrooms, which were very addictive and had great texture. I wish it was just all shitake. Haha.

Dark Ale Shortribs, P695.00

dijon mash, wilted romaine, shallot confit, braised leek, glazed carrot
A bit of both veggies and decadent meat here. The mashed potatoes buried underneath it all was really good, and the meat was so tender. Everything else on the plate was enjoyable as well, especially the sweet, oniony shallots.

Smoked Duck Ham Aglio Olio, P458.00

spaghetti, French duck breast, garlic, chili flakes, cherry tomato confit, ciabatta toast
We wanted to try a tiny bit of everything, so we got some pasta too. I'm not much of a duck or aglio olio fan (unless it's drowning in garlic) but this was not bad. It was not spicy, as the chili flakes might indicate. The cherry tomatoes tasted great.

Hanger Steak & Chips, P725.00 (medium-rare)

Medium-rare is the way all steak should be eaten, unless you want it even more raw. :) This bloody delight was as good as it looks. The meat was tender and had good taste, and was juicier than the shortribs. As for the truffle fries, well, we pretty much forgot all about the duck fat fries once we tried these! They were the best truffle fries I've ever tasted. Granted, I haven't tried many, but this was still really, really good. If you were avoiding fries, this would be your worst nightmare. Haha. I usually like the truffle flavor on creamy pasta and nowhere else, but it worked really great strongly coating these glorious fries.

Brioche Bread Pudding, P325.00

bacon jam, maple syrup, chocolate ice cream
Ice cream and bacon jam are strange bedfellows on a bed of yummy brioche bread pudding. Put 'em all together and take a bite out of the moist pudding and you might enjoy the sinful frenzy that will ensue in your mouth. A good way to end this culinary adventure. That's not all though...

Yummy! I'm no alcoholic, but there's nothing like occasionally ending a busy day with some alcohol in your system. You could do it with a simple bottle of San Miguel, or you could do it in style with a selection of Niner Ichi Nana's cocktails. We liked them all evenly, but my personal favorite was the Caramelised Toddy, being the alcoholic-sweet-tooth that I am. The rest was good too, and I ended up consuming the Old Fashioned, which was very potent, but also quite smooth. Alvie really liked the Cold Rosalina, which was the lightest of the four drinks. The Wood Picks gets plus points for the awesome mug. Haha.
