How to Visit Kis-Balaton – Part 1

First of all, what is Kis-Balaton? Describing it as a smaller version of the Balaton lake, is not entirely correct. It is indeed smaller, but we talk more about wetlands here than a real lake. Moreover, Kis-Balaton is not a touristic attraction as such, it is first and foremost a nature reserve. It is located to the west of the Balaton Lake itself.

By the way, if you want to know more about the Balaton area, I suggest you have a look at our posts of last spring, when we spent a lot of time there.

Anyway, getting access to the nature reserve is not that easy. We’ll make it easy for you! Follow our example and start your tour in the small town of Zalavar, 9 kilometers to the southwest of the Balaton lake. Just a quiet place with a beautiful yellow church:
