Ewing sarcoma is a small, malignant, round, blue cell tumor. It is a rare disease. It mostly grows in bones or soft tissues around the bones, such as nerves and the cartilages. Ewing sarcoma mostly affects long bones of legs and arms, but it may occur in any bone or soft tissues of arms, legs and abdomen. Long bones affected are femur, shinbone (tibia) and humerus. The pelvic bones are also affected. It can occur in any age group but is common in teenagers and young adults. Ewing sarcoma is common in white people and very rarely found in Asian Americans, Africans or Americans.
The tumor begins in the soft tissues and muscles is known as extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma. It can spread to other body parts like lungs, bone marrow and other soft tissues.
Classification of Ewing Sarcoma
According to the study the classification is made
- Ewing sarcoma of bone.
- Ewing sarcoma of soft tissue.
- Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (both bone & soft tissues).
- Askins tumor (occurs in bones of the chest).
- All these are related as they all have similar genetic causes.
Signs & Symptoms
A common symptom is pain or swelling on the surface of skin affected with a tumor. A lump is found on the surface skin which is warm to touch.
Other Symptoms Include
- High or mild fever
- Loss of weight
- Loss of appetite
- Patient get fatigued easily
- Malaise
- Bone breaks without reason
- Low Hb leads to anemia
- Pain in bone worsen at night or with little physical activity
- Pain, swelling, redness and tenderness of the affected parts
- Limping due to leg pain
Causes
It's not inherited but occurs due to non - inherited changes in specific genes. Ewing sarcoma is due to the exchange of genetic material of chromosomes 11 and 12, which cause activation of overgrowth of cells.
Types
- Localized Ewing's Sarcoma : It affects only local areas and do not spread to other areas.
- Metastatic Ewing's Sarcoma : It mostly affects lungs and occurs in any other body parts too.
- Recurrent Ewing's Sarcoma : Cancer does not respond to any treatment if treated return back after some time. It mostly recurs in lungs.
Risk Factors
- The adolescence children affected more. Mostly it affects the age group 2 to 15 years.
- Affects mostly Caucasians than in African American.
- Men's are affected more. Studies have shown that it affects 59% of men and 41% of women.
Diagnosis
- X-Ray - In this test images of bones and identification of tumor is diagnosed.
- MRI SCAN - Used to scan the image of organs, muscles, soft tissues, and other structures to rule out the tumor and other abnormalities.
- CT SCAN- It helps to get cross-section image of bones and tissues.
- EOS Imaging is done to see the interaction of joints and muscles while the person is standing.
- BONE Scan of the whole body to see if the tumor is metastasized.
- PET Scan
- Biopsy
- Blood Test
Treatment
1. Chemotherapy
Drugs are used to kill cancerous cells. It is the first line of cancer treatment. Before surgery go for chemotherapy as it shrinks the size of the tumor and makes it easy to remove.
2. Surgery
Surgery is done to remove cancer cells and to maintain the functions and prevent disability. It removes a small piece or entire bone.
3. Radiation Therapy
High energy beam is used such as x-ray, rays or protons to kills cancer cells. It is done after surgery to kill remaining cells. It also helps to relieve pain occurs in Ewing sarcoma.
According to Ayurveda
It's of two types or stages
- Granthi - It means benign or minor neoplasm.
- Arbuda - It means malignant or major tumor.
According to Ayurveda, the tumor is formed due to Vata and Kapha doshas imbalance. Vata is responsible for its growth hence, vata pushes kapha dosha out of the balance resulting in tumor formation.

- Many pathways to prevent brain tumors are not known, yet it is better to avoid the chemicals in the food.
- Do not make a habit of waking up for long hours . Sleep is essential to keep the nervous system calm.
- Eat foods rich in vitamins and nutritions. Pay special attention to foods containing Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and Vitamin E.
- Make distance from junk food or canned food items.
- Drink plenty of water.
