The workplace is ruinous to healthy eating. There are vending machines full of calorific snacks, random biscuit tins, and no end of unhealthy lunches out with clients or handy fast-food outlets within easy walking distance. For anyone trying to lose weight or stick to a healthy eating plan, the workplace can make it really difficult to stay on track.
One way to avoid many of the temptations you will face at work is to prepare and take your own snacks and food to eat. If you have your own food you won’t be as tempted to pop out for a burger or dip your hand into the biscuit barrel. You do need to have some self-control, however, so don’t assume that a packed lunch will solve all your woes!
So, what ingredients should you use to prepare healthy meals for work?
Firstly, take a good look at what accommodations your workplace has to offer. If there is a kitchen with a microwave or hotplate, this will make life easier, but don’t despair if there is only a kettle – there are plenty of healthy food options you can prepare at home and then take to work.
Salad Pots
Salad pots are very quick and easy to make at home. If you only ever use cucumber, lettuce and tomato, your lunch will not be very inspiring and nor will it fill you up, so add avocado, smoked salmon, cashew nuts, sliced apple and orange, and perhaps some quinoa or couscous. The end result will be tasty and exceptionally nutritious.
Homemade Soup
Soup doesn’t take much effort to prepare at home and there are lots of recipes online if you need inspiration. The great thing about soup is that you can prepare it in bulk and freeze portions for future meals. You will need a microwave to warm up your soup at work, but if there isn’t one, make some chilled soup instead – it will be just as delicious.
Healthy Sandwiches
Avoid white bread and stick to healthy whole grain bread, preferably homemade. Healthy sandwich ingredients include turkey, salad, prosciutto ham, avocado, tuna and chicken. If you don’t like bread, use pita pockets or wraps instead. Make sure you stay well away from mayo or other dressings, as these contain lots of fat and calories. And if you want a super healthy sandwich, avoid spread and use mashed avocado instead.
Nutritious Snacks
Snacks are pretty essential if you want to get through the workday without resorting to stealing biscuits from your colleague or a taking a sneaky trip to KFC. However, rather than snacking on the bad stuff, chop up some carrot sticks and bring a small pot of hummus to work. Or, pack some fresh fruit and a bowl of mixed nuts and seeds. So much healthier!
