Nowadays, It is often seen that a huge proportion of the male population is suffering from the problem of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). This attack refers to a transient episode of Neurologic Dysfunction which occurs due to loss of blood flow (Ischemia) in the spinal cord as well as in the brain without the death of tissues. The symptoms of this disorder do not persist beyond one hour which means that its symptoms typically resolve in a short duration of time. It is also known as a "ministroke" because TIA produces similar symptoms to the stroke that lasts for a few minutes without causing permanent damage.

The transient ischemic attack may be considered as a warning of serious stroke and almost one-third of the population who suffers from TIA will eventually have a stroke within a year after it. This can also serve as an opportunity to take preventive measures or to start treatment to save a person from a future complication that is Stroke.

Risk factors of Transient Ischemic Attack:

There are various risk factors that trigger the Transient Ischemic Attack and it is possible to control some of the risk factors. Some risk factors are often modifiable while some of them are non- modifiable. Various risk factors of Transient Ischemic Attack are written as follows:

a) Modifiable risk factors:-

  • Cigarette Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Asymptomatic or Symptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis.

b) Non-Modifiable Risk Factors:-

Signs and Symptoms of Transient Ischemic Attack:

Transient Ischemic Attack usually lasts for a few minutes and most of the signs and symptoms disappear within an hour. Few of the common Signs and Symptoms of TIA are as below:

  • Vertigo
  • Gait Abnormality
  • Impaired Speech
  • Double Vision
  • Loss of Vision

Diagnosis of Transient Ischemic Attack:

If any of the above-mentioned symptoms is present in a person then he or she should consult with a doctor for the proper diagnosis of Transient Ischemic Attack. The diagnosis of TIA involves an evaluation of various symptoms in the patients. A doctor will also recommend some tests. Few of the tests are mentioned below:

1. Physical Examination: Physical examination involves testing of risk factors for stroke including High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol Levels, Diabetes and Levels of Amino Acid (Homocysteine).

2. Carotid Ultrasonography: This test involves the use of a transducer that is fitted inside a wand-like device that sends High-Frequency Sound Waves into the neck that helps to test Narrowing or Clotting in the carotid arteries.

3. Computerized Tomography (CT) Scanning: Computerized tomography involves scanning of patient's head using a beam of X-rays.

4. Computerized Tomography Angiography (CTA) Scanning: It is Non-invasive evaluation of narrowing or clotting of arteries in the neck and brain.

5. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Magnetic resonance imaging is used for generation of composite 3D view of the brain by the use of strong magnetic field.

6. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA): MRA involves evaluation of arteries in the neck and brain with the help of strong magnetic field.

7. Echocardiography: This technique provides clear and detailed ultrasound images of the heart. Also, it provides a better view of clots in the blood.

Management of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA):

After reading the above article, you should be thinking about how Transient Ischemic Attacks should be managed. Basically, most Allopathic Doctors recommend anticoagulants, thrombolytic agents and anti-platelet drugs. These drugs decrease the likelihood and severity of the symptoms of the disease. However, Allopathic doctors also suggest that patients should undergo surgery or Angioplasty in case of clogged arteries and for some severe conditions.
