How to Have a Green Birthday

Posted on the 16 January 2013 by T_mackinnon @tedmackinnon

A birthday is probably everybody’s most anticipated day throughout the year. The day when you are the ‘star’, you get all the attention and all the presents. Plus, this is all accompanied with a great birthday party with all your family members and friends, and basically all the people you love and care for. However, festivities like these have their own drawbacks. They tend to leave a lot of mess and can be really NOT eco-friendly as well as harm the environment. However, on your special day you can do a couple of things in order to contribute for a greener birthday party.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

How To Have a Green Birthday
The first step of having a green birthday is to adhere to the rule of the three R’s. Reduce the overall amount of waste your family will produce by only buying as much as you will be able to consume. For example, start off with the food. Remember that this is no competition, so there is just no use of buying in large quantities.

The amount of the food you buy needs to be corresponding to the number of the people you invited at your birthday. There’s no use of eating just the half of it and throwing away the other half. After all, some people cannot even afford throwing a good birthday party with a profuse meal. When you go to the grocery store to do your birthday shopping, carry a reusable bag with you. Also, using cloth napkins that can be washed and used again is a good alternative to using paper ones which get used by the pound.

Once the birthday dinner is over and it is time to clear the table, don’t forget about recycling. Separate your waste in different garbage bags – paper in one bag, plastic in another and glass in third. As for the food waste, add it to your compost pile and enrich the soil in your garden.

Celebrate at Home

Cars and buses are constantly moving and polluting the air so why take part in this and contribute to the pollution that is about to take place? Rather organize a home party. Your home, your rules. Plus, you will get to save traveling money. Or, if for some reason you cannot throw a party at home, celebrate at a local restaurant/disco. After all, who would want to endure long and tedious traffic jams?

Ask for Eco-friendly Gifts

People tend to buy things with an unclear background, whose manufacturing has done some serious polluting. Rather tell you friends and family to prepare for you presents bought from second-hand/thrift stores or, even better, to make the gifts themselves.

Plant a Tree

Birthdays are usually the time of the year when one tends to make certain resolutions. So, this year, instead of making one in a personal aspect, why not make your resolution a global one? One that could give its share in contributing to the Earth’s well-being.

Plant a tree in order to help fight global warming and the greenhouse effect. Trees are well-known for absorbing carbon dioxide and giving off oxygen. You can also repeat that ritual in case you are moving to another residence, so make it greener.

Make your own Eco-friendly Decoration

Creating your own decoration is another method of both saving money and being environmentally-friendly. Forget all the plastic decoration that take too long of a time to dissolve. Choose coloured paper, for example. It is easily recycled. Same goes for baker’s clay.

Being eco-friendly on your birthday is easier than you imagined. All you need is to realize that your contribution to saving the environment does matter.
