There’s no denying that dogs have long be recognized as best friends, faithful companions, and family members.
From the moment we rescue/adopt our dogs from the shelter or from an inadequate home, we begin the bonding process. We spend time training them, nurturing them, and love them unconditionally. In return, the bond grows stronger, and you start to realize that you are being loved in return.
Communication
The more time you spend with your dog, you start to notice what appears to be emotions. From the puppy dogs eyes, the different tail wags, whining, barking, and licking. These are all ways your dog is communicating with you. How you answer him/her depends on how strong you understand them. Some people may think dogs don’t have emotions nor can they talk. I beg to differ. My boy, Bean can certainly let me know when something is wrong with him as well as when something is wrong with me.
Health
Did you know dogs have been known to let their owners know when there is a health issue? Dogs can also pick up on our emotions and know when we are happy or sad solely based on our body language or the tone of our voice.
The bond that I have with my baby is so strong that he actually alerts me to when my menstrual cycle is about to begin. Normally about two (2) days prior, Bean gets dominant with me and wants to make love to his momma. Seriously, he knows when it is coming! Amazing, right?
Healing
You may remember my post Dogs Are Scientifically Proven to Aide in Healing. Dogs sense when we are down, sad, or depressed. They may feel the need to be a bit more clingy to you or nudging you with their nose to keep your attention. Dogs can be very therapeutic in helping one heal from depression and/or many other illnesses by merely bringing happiness to our minds.

- Dogs get gifts from their owners during Christmas – 63%
- Dogs get birthday gifts from their owners – 36%
I am guilty as charged. Another one that I find amusing is:
- Buying a vehicle with the convenience of the dog in mind – 16%
I would tend to see this one a bit higher. You can’t imagine how many vehicles I have been through in the past five (5) years that I’ve had Bean, just so that he would be more comfortable and get into more easily.
Human qualities
#Dogs understand more than you think they do!Absolutely dogs understand!
- We talk to our dogs. I hold daily conversations with Bean, and I know, he understands. We use trigger words a lot because we battled separation anxiety during our first year together. He understands “Be back” and many other commands to help him feel more at ease when Cranky and I leave the home.
- Dogs make us feel happy. When I have been down and out or emotionally distressed, Bean has been there always to try to make me happy. He will do the silliest things, and I tell you, he helps me 100% of the time. I am truly blessed.
- Protect and Rescue. I have no doubt in my mind that if someone tried to hurt me, Bean would defend me til his death. As a matter of fact, Cranky and I play a bit rough at times. If Cranky “playingly” smacks my butt or something and I scream and yell for “Help”, Bean will get in between the two of us and protect me but barking and biting at Cranky. Bean is my soul protector, and I am forever grateful.
In conclusion
Dogs are such wonderful creatures, and there is a realm full of people who will vouch for that. In most families, dogs aren’t just dogs. They are Family. In my home, Bean is my son, my furson and I treat him as the loving and loyal King that he is. 😉
