Mayhem ensues under the mistletoe as a determined shopper grabs the very last hot toy action figure off the shelf, only to find herself plunged into the middle of a real-life spy game and in the arms of a sexy secret agent…

Hot Toy is a very short but fun and light read by Jennifer Crusie. This novella was previously published as part of the Santa Baby anthology and while the book is a total of about 75 pages, it is filled with lots of Christmas fun. It’s a little bit over the top, but aren’t all novellas?

The story starts out sharing with readers about Trudy Maxwell, who is looking for the “toy of the year” for her nephew – a McGuffin. The problem for Trudy is that it is Christmas Eve and the stores are simply out of the action figure.  Trudy searches shelf after shelf hoping someone has hidden one of the toys she so can buy it out from under them. While searching, unfortunately, she bumps into a former date and she pretends (Nolan) she doesn’t see him. At the same time and store, Trudy also stumbles upon Reese, her dad’s former RA. Because Trudy doesn’t want to get stuck with Nolan so she flirts a little with Reese. The end result is that Trudy ends up having two different conversations at the same time as all three of them happen to know each other.

Still in her search, Trudy finds the “hot toy” — with the exception of the fact that it’s last year’s model.  She doesn’t care though and takes it and in fact, others offer her a lot of money for the toy. Trudy holds on to the toy but finds that the people she deals with are not who they seem to be. Trudy finds herself in a ton of trouble over this “hot toy”.

The intrigue and humor of this short book had me laughing being shocked at the same time. The author really shows us how crazy the holiday season can be! Obviously with only 75 pages, the characters aren’t over developed so you don’t actually get emotionally attached to anyone, but since it’s a quick, light read, it’s not necessary anyway.
