The Hungarian puszta… I had heard about it and Ingrid had seen it in movies. It was about time to see it in reality.
After our stay in Poland, we drove to the city of Debrecen:

If you are a follower of this website, you know that we both like to visit the national park in the south of Langeland with its wild horses. It’s free and you can drive wherever and whenever you want. We thought we could do the same on the puszta, but we were so mistaken…
The best thing to do is to go to the visitor center. It’s right in the heart of Hortobagy, so it is easy to find. There you will discover that the National Park consists of different sites, devoted to culture, history or nature. Some of them are free, others are not. The rule is very simple: the more interesting the site, the more you have to pay. To make things more complicated: there are sites where you have to pay cash and others where you can use your bank and/or credit card. Want to see the wildlife from very close? You have to pay extra. Want an English speaking guide, you pay even more.
Ingrid and I went to go to the Rare Breeds Park. You already get an idea of how the puszta looks like and you see familiar animals like wild horses and cows.
And less familiar species like for example woolly pigs…
The park is open from spring to autumn; in the other seasons, you need a special permit. You have to pay a small fee to get in and it’s cash only (which we didn’t know, so we got in for free!).
