Snoring can be caused by the rattling of loose tissues in the upper airstream when you breathe. It happens when air cannot move freely through the nasal passage and throat while asleep. As a result, the surrounding tissues starts vibrating and this produces the familiar snoring sounds that you hear.

Alcohol consumption: One of the causes of snoring is excessive intake of alcohol. Alcohol is a sedative substance and when it acts as a relaxant to the muscles in the throat, it can cause snoring. Therefore it is not advisable to take excessive alcohol especially when it is close to bedtime.

After that, normal breathing pattern starts again, sometimes accompanied with a loud snoring. Sleep apnea is usually experienced by older people and overweight people. So it is advised to see the Doctor whenever you or your partner experiences sleep apnea as lack of treatment can cause headache, fatigue heart problem and high blood pressure.

Overweight: Being overweight is another cause of snoring. This is because when you are overweight, it is difficult for air to pass through the fatty tissue in the throat and airways and this leads to snoring.

Smoking: Studies have shown that smoking is a major cause of snoring. It has been proven that smokers are more likely to snore than non-smokers. Smoking is known to cause respiratory problems. The respiratory tissues in the airways gets irritated by the smoke being inhaled by the smoker, and this causes the tissues to be inflamed and swollen thereby causing a blockage to the airways and this causes snoring.
