Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sathorn is conveniently located near the center of Bangkok, merely a three-minute walk away from the Chong Nonsi BTS Station. It’s near to almost everything—the shopping centers in Silom and Ratchaprasong, the nightlife district at Silom, and the tourist haunts near the Chao Phraya River, such as Asiatique, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun. And accessibility isn’t a problem because it’s situated near a major thoroughfare about 30 minutes away from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airport.
Holiday Inn Express is a concept of the well-known Intercontinental Hotel Group, which describes it as, “The smart choice for travellers who need a simple, engaging hotel to rest, recharge and get a little work done.” A fast-growing brand, it has more than 220,000 rooms in 2,300 hotels globally.
It was our first time to stay at a Holiday Inn Express, and although we’ve stayed at some Holiday Inn properties before, we were quite unsure how the word “Express” made a distinction. But we later got our answer upon seeing a row of luggage carts at the door—apparently, we needed to help ourselves as we would at an airport. But we thought the carts were unique and cool.
After lugging our baggage from the cab’s trunk to the cart, we were welcomed to the hotel’s sleek lobby by charming front staff. While our stay arrangements were being facilitated, we marveled at the hipness of the place and paid extra attention to the humungous Bangkok cartoon emblazoned at the lobby. The process of checking us in didn’t take too long though; we were handed our keys immediately and we pushed our cart to the lift then onward to our room.
We loved the look and the modern feel of our room, thanks to its stylish interiors and the choice of colors—a mix of blue and earth tones. And although compact in size, the room is laid out well.
The room features all the traveler essentials: a comfortable queen bed with prime linens and a choice of soft and firm pillows, an ergonomic desk with a lamp and universal power points, a 32” LED TV, a minibar, coffee and tea making facility, closet space, an electronic safe, and of course, complimentary wireless internet. The spotless bathroom, meanwhile, has a powerful shower with massage function, complemented by a suite of towels and basic bath amenities.
Breakfasts are also quite unique at the hotel, with their two concepts: Express Start and Grab & Go. With the former, guests may choose from a modest spread and dine at the cafeteria-like dining hall, while with the latter, they may quickly pick their breakfast items from a counter.
While Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sathorn can be considered a limited service hotel, it still offers a careful selection of facilities: a fitness room, internet stations, a pay and go counter with snacks and essentials, a meeting room, and a self-service laundry and ironing room.
Even though we didn’t think that we’d be doing a number of things ourselves at the Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sathorn, it’s a hip hotel we’ve added to our top value picks in Bangkok. Forgoing some of the usual services meant we were getting a comfortable bed and shower, modest breakfasts, and an array of facilities at a price affordable for a reputable chain hotel room.
