Hidden Between the Vineyards

By Ingridd @cosytraveler

Nature is a wonderful architect! Lars and I have been traveling for 5 years now, and although we have already seen a lot of fantastic landscapes, sometimes we still stumble upon something that simply takes our breath away. The Hegyestu Geological Exhibition Site is such a place…

Program your GPS device for Monoszlo and follow the road signs to Hegyestu. The entrance fee is about € 2 – 3. The nature park is closed between mid-November and mid-March.

What you see are the remains of a basalt volcano, that was active 5 – 6 million years ago. You can actually hike on granite rocks of more than 300 meters high! This is what we saw when we got out of the car:

Although Lars and I suffer from vertigo, we decided to climb what was once a volcano. All the way up to the crater…

And we made it! Walking around that crater was the best feeling ever! We highly recommend Hegyestu; it’s a geological and historical rarity, it’s cheap and … fantastic!

What did Lars and I see when we reached the top? Find out tomorrow!
