Herbal Remedies for Bullous Pemphigoid

Abstract

Today, again we are going to discuss a rare disease about which research is still going on and the exact cause is still unknown but it is categorized under autoimmune diseases and it is a skin disease called Bullous pemphigoid. In this article, we will elaborate on the disease, its causes, the Ayurvedic aspect of the disease, herbal way to treat it, and about the dietary and lifestyle guidelines to be followed to manage this disease condition.

Herbal Remedies for Bullous Pemphigoid

Introduction

Pemphigoid is a rare skin disease that produces various blisters on the body and bullous pemphigoid is one of its types. This is characterized by large fluid-filled bullae or blisters that are very painful and largely elevated on the skin and usually occur on the areas which we need to flex for the movement like the armpit, thigh, etc. This is an autoimmune disease and can occur at any age but the incidence ratio is high in old aged people and can affect both the sexes equally.

Ayurvedic Aspect of the Disease

As per Ayurveda, this is a Twak Vikara which occurs due to vitiation of all the tridoshas especially Pitta and Kapha dosha, and raise big blisters on the skin, which are filled with fluid, after affecting rasa (lymph), Rakta (Blood), mamsa (muscle tissue), and Meda (adipose tissue) dhatu in our body. And causes Kandu (Itching), Daha (Burning sensation), Ruja (Pain), etc.

What are the Causes of Bullous Pemphigoid?

  • As discussed earlier the cause is still unknown but the main issue of this disease is considered our overactive immune system which will attack our healthy cells of the body due to misdirection and misunderstand the normal cells as a foreign body and causes abnormality and reflects on our skin in the form of blisters.
  • There are some other causes:
  • Diet - Excessive consumption of hot, spicy, oily foodstuffs, abhishyandi food items (which causes obstruction in the channels), incompatible food combinations, etc.
  • Lifestyle - Excessive exposure to chemicals, ultraviolet rays, etc.
  • History of Autoimmune diseases like Scleroderma, etc.
  • Long-term use of steroids may result in skin issues.

Symptoms

There are various signs and symptoms:

  • The main characteristic feature of this disease is blistered and they are filled with fluid.
  • Areas that are affected more are the armpits, abdomen, knees, thighs, legs, etc.
  • Itching is quite common in these areas.
  • Multiple rashes like hives.
  • Laceration
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Inability to move or flex the parts hence hampers the range of movement.
  • Burning sensation.
  • There will be pain and stiffness in the area.
  • Repeated occurrence.
  • Lesions may be associated with weakness, fatigue, etc.

Diagnosis

It can be diagnosed clinically on the basis of presentation of blisters but sometimes if it's a long-standing one then may need a skin biopsy to know the chances of malignancy or to differentiate it from any other disease.

Treatment as per Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, Bullous Pemphigoid Disease can be treated with the help of herbs and detoxification methods very easily. Like Virechana and Vamana are beneficial in such conditions. Internal medicines are beneficial for detoxification, blood purification, and healing the eroded skin. 1. Manjishtha Capsule

  • Stop using the milk products, sour foods, and spicy foods as they may vitiate pitta dosha in the body which is the main cause of this disease.
  • Reduce salt and sugar intake.
  • Add a few things to a daily routine like - juice of Neem, Aloe vera, Amla, or Giloy.
  • Maintain proper hygiene.

Conclusion

Skin diseases can be managed some time with the topical steroids but can't resolve completely. On exposure to various factors, the condition will reoccur. But Herbal medicines help to kill the root cause and treat them well. So, in the case of Bullous Pemphigoid, it is a better option to treat them naturally.
